Summary
The INEP Institute –Tasks within EnerKey
Within the EnerKey project, INEP acts as a practice partner within the project module 7: Implementation and Technology Transfer. INEP works on the development and implementation of a low-cost, energy efficient housing code for the low-income and poor population in South Africa. This so-called “African Sustainable Housing Code” (ASH-Code) shall serve as a planning and evaluation tool for sustainable low-cost housing options in South Africa by politicians, practitioners and community representatives.
The ASH-Code consists of a technical concept that evaluates on and proposes different construction and supply options for residential housing units. Its second component is a social concept that addresses community engagement, socio-cultural acceptance issues and social development options through empowerment strategies.
Tasks that INEP fulfils within the EnerKey project include:
- Research on socio-economic backgrounds and needs of urban poor population related to housing, especially in informal, poor and low-income settlements
- Analyse existent housing policies and programs towards low-cost housing by the South African Government
- Assess different building materials and construction options that meet policy requirements but introduce energy efficiency measures
- Evaluate different energy efficient technology options with regard to their social acceptance and social empowerment potential
- Develop an integrated concept for low-cost housing in South Africa that addresses energy efficient technology, construction, community development and engagement options
- Implement a model house that applies energy efficient technology options and links them with empowerment and community development activities
A first model house that follows the ASH-Code has been successfully implemented in the Township of Ilitha, Eastern Cape, in cooperation with the local church community. It is used as a community house and hosts education and training events on HIV/Aids prevention. INEP further seeks to implement a model community house in the province of Gauteng.
