In Module 2 - Stakeholders and Socio-Economic Drivers a series of thematic workshops and events like e.g. colloquia are carried out. The core objective is to channel input and knowledge of Gauteng based experts into the EnerKey project. The workshops and events are generally held in a strongly participatory manner, thus to give the participants the possibility to exchange experiences and ideas and to generate a common understanding on thematic issues which are of key importance for the EnerKey project.

Following workshops and events have been carried out:

Colloquium: ‘Energy and the Urban Poor’
IZT, Berlin, 10th Dec. 2009

The aim of the colloquium was to exchange ideas and discuss key questions in the field of energy and the urban poor with a small group of people.

On the way to the COP 15 to Copenhagen, the colloquium was enriched by guests from South Africa. Douglas Guy (PEER Africa Ltd.), project developer and project partner within EnerKey as well as Ziganile Yvonne Welem (WEHBSO iEEECO™ Human Settlement), community manager of the Witsand iEEECO™ Village project in Cape Town, presented their view. Additional input was given by Christian Kimmich (Humboldt University Berlin) and Lutz Meyer-Ohlendorf (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK). Both presented their perspective gained from the BMBF-Research project "Hyderabad as a Megacity of Tomorrow".

Thus the colloquium should be understood as an initial point for an ongoing discussion on relevant themes, comprising issues of energy and megacity developments.

Presentations:

‘Spatial planning for a low-carbon city’ Futures Workshop -
Melville, Johannesburg, 20th Oct. 2009

The aim of the workshop was to create a better understanding of key challenges for energy efficient and low carbon urban planning in the Global City Region of Gauteng. With a small group of selected experts key issues of future urban development in Gauteng were discussed. Energy related challenges and possible “scenario drivers” for the EnerKey scenarios were identified.

‘Energy and Low-income Housing’ Workshop -
Randburg, Johannesburg, 19th Oct. 2009

The main aim of the workshop was to discuss the current status and future energy related challenges for low-income housing. The workshop addressed achievements by pilot projects as well as lessons learnt, barriers and success factors, which are in a long run important for the roll-out and transferability of sustainable energy approaches on a broad scale.
