The Region of Gauteng and Greater Johannesburg

Gauteng (www.gpg.gov.za), the 'place of gold', is a vibrant region in the north-east of South Africa. With a population of more than 8 million people it covers only 2% of SA land but is urbanized to a degree of 96%. In Gauteng three of six metropolitan areas of SA are located.

Johannesburg (www.joburg.org.za) including neighbouring towns such as Sandton, Randburg and the townships of Soweto and Alexandra is larger than Sydney, London and New York together. 40% of the city's 3 million occupants are under the age of 24.

With a population of around 3 million people the Metropolitan Municipality of Ekurhuleni (www.ekurhuleni.com), in Tsonga 'place of peace', is the country's fourth-largest municipality. It is bordered by Johannesburg to the east and Tshwane to the north.

The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (www.tshwane.gov.za) was established in 2000 with greater Pretoria and surrounding areas integrated. The area is inhabited by approximately 2,2 million people.
